What I do:
I am an ecologist, with special interest in coral reef fishes and fisheries. I began working in freshwater systems and flowed to the sea...I must be anadromous! I worked as a marine/fisheries ecologist in the Virgin Islands for about 15 years before returning to teach in the states with my wife, Lisa Muehlstein. BUT most our research is still in the Caribbean. My primary interests are population and community ecology and conservation biology of tropical systems, although we have some freshwater/estuarine studies.

At Jacksonville University, I teach courses in  Marine Ecology, Ichthyology, Conservation and Environmental Science.

My current research focuses on ecosystem interactions and marine protected areas. We have funded research in the Virgin Islands on the enhancement of reef fish populations by adjacent seagrass systems. Presently, we are investigating the potential mechanisms for the enhancement effect. Students are involved in this research and are encouraged in their own research projects. We hope to teach a course in the Virgin Islands in Coral Reef Biology next year.

See description of the Jacksonville University Programs in Marine Science and Environmental Studies.
