Professional Biography

Dr. Joan Carver is Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Professor of Political Science at Jacksonville University. Prior to becoming dean in 1983 Dr. Carver was a full-time member of the teaching faculty. Dr. Carver holds a B.A. (magna cum laude) from Barnard College, an M.A. from the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill), and a Ph.D. from the University of Florida. Her major for all three degrees was political science.

Dr. Carver has been involved with a number of professional and community activities. She served from 1990 through 1993 as a member of the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services, a committee advisory to the Secretary of Defense, and was chair of the Career Opportunities Subcommittee and a member of the Executive Committee. She is a past member of the Board of Directors of the Florida Humanities Council and chairman of the Board of Advisors of the World Affairs Council; past president of the Women's Caucus for Political Science: South; of the Florida Political Science Association; of the N.E. Florida Chapter of the American Society for Public Administration; and of the Jacksonville Women's Network. Dr. Carver is a past member of the Mayor's Commission on the Status of Women, of the Board of the Jacksonville YWCA, member and President of the Board of St. Johns Country Day School, and a past Board member and Secretary of the Jacksonville Community Council Inc. She is currently on the boards of Meninak and the jacksonville League of women voters. Dr. Carver has served as Chair of the J.U. Faculty and of a number of university committees.

 
Dr. Carver's research interests are in urban government and politics, Florida politics, and women in politics. Among the journals in which her articles have appeared are the Journal of Politics, Urban Affairs Quarterly, American Politics Quarterly, and The Florida Historical Quarterly.

 
Honors and awards received include being selected as Jacksonville University Professor of the Year in 1971 and as an EVE award recipient in education in 1982. She is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi.
