JOSEPH CALVIT’S SERVICE IN THE OLD NORTHWEST

Sadly, best viewed with Microsoft Explorer

The material below comes from the Microfilmed George Rogers Clark Papers at the Virginia State Library and Archives and the Abstract to the George Rogers Clark Papers. The Illinois Regiment.  Based on the Microfilmed George Rogers Clark Papers At the Virginia State Library and Archives, comp. Richard Eugene Willson (Chicago: The Society, 1998).  The Abstract and microfilm are difficult to use.  Orders, requisitions, etc., were written on scraps of papers, which time has not treated well.  Ink has faded and paper has degraded.  There are also some discrepancies between the Abstract and the microfilmed documents, e.g., several documents according to the Abstract refer to Joseph Calvit, when, in reality, the documents actually refer to a Joseph Crockett.

More seriously, for reels 5, 6, and 9, the Abstract frequently notes a “James Calvit,” shose movements mirror Joseph’s.  There is no evidence that such a person existed among George Rogers Clark’s troops, and the signatures in the referenced documents clearly show “Jos Calvit,” as Joseph frequently signed his name.  It seems likely that James is, in fact, Joseph.  If this is true, the documents below do not substantively change my appraisal of Joseph’s service under Clark—except to be even more impressed how much alcohol was an essential staple in a soldier’s diet of the period.  There are, however, several documents, which might add something to our understanding of how Joseph got to Natchez.  On May 3, 4, and 25 provisions were ordered to supply James/Joseph on a trip downstream.  Yet, he appears to have remained at his post at least until July 7.[1]  Two document refers to Calvit as a captain and another gives his name as “Calvert.”

Finally, sometimes it is hard to determine which photocopy frame a certain document occupies.  Therefore, some document citations might be off by one frame.  Reel 7 is particularly dangerous in this regard.  Finally, on the assumption that the original documents used by the Abstract editors are more clear than are the microfilmed copies, I have used both the Abstract and the microfilm to determine as best I can what the documents say.
