Dave Matthews was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. He has also lived in England and New York before settling in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Carter Beauford was from Charlottesville, Virginia

Stefan Lessard is the youngest member of the group and was 16 years old when he joined the band. He is from Anaheim, CA.

LeRoi Moore and Carter were jazz compatriots for years and played together for small gigs or jam sessions.

Boyd Tinsley was the last member to join the band. He too is also a native of Charlottesville, VA. He released his own solo album called True Reflections in 2003.

Their first official gig was in May of 1991 at a private rooftop party in Charlottesville, VA.
Their first public show was at the city's Earth Day Festival in 1991.
