Architecture and Fractals

Eiffel Tower

  • Mandelbrot (1982) hypothesized that the Eiffel tower was built using deliberate fractal curves.1

  • An organic, fractal quality can be seen in the intricate baroque carvings of the Paris Opera House . 2

  • In contrast, the block structures of modern architecture seem cold and lifeless. "It is entirely conceivable that the low level of fractal complexity in modern inner cities is a strong contributing factor to the high incidence of depression reported in these kinds of environment."2
